Sunday School with Atheists [08/07/11] *A CRITIQUE OF ARIZONA'S ATHEIST PODCAST KNOWN AS 'DESERT AIR'
After hearing the first episode of an Arizona-based Atheist podcast called Desert AIR, we thought it would be helpful to do a review of the program's analysis of the Book of Revelation and Christian eschatology. Our main critique will be that the hosts are not interpreting the highlighted passages in a serious way and the panelists are naive about basic New Testament issues (such as the fact that it was all written in Greek).

Well…I like the fact that you used the clips. However, you crossed the line a few times when you assume that, as Atheists, are concerned with god getting serious about kicking butt. As a minor point, all Atheists do not revere Star Wars. Some even believe that Star Trek is the better SciFi genre due to the fact that it deals with humanist values.
Thank you for recognizing us for our individual accomplishments and intelligence.
I feel I must explain the reason that I won’t come on a program with someone that believes in a young earth or that the story of Noah is a true account of historical events. There is no way I can be more compelling than the natural evidence that you have already been exposed to during your education. There are multiple disciplines of study that one must utterly ignore to stick with the conclusion that the earth is less than 10,0000 years old–geology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, and let’s not forget the study of man anthropology. In addition, zoology and biology are inconsistent with a “whole earth” restart 6 thousand years ago.
People who hold these believes are willful in their ignorance and no argument by a single person can make a difference.
You and your guests had a lot of fun laughing at our confusion about what is a very confusing book of the bible but I think you closed it out fairly when you reiterated that the underlying difference is that we have no belief in any god and especially the Christian God.
So it should be clear that if you came on to our program you would have as much of a chance of making me believe in the Christian God as I would have making you accept the lessons of the sciences. I have been exposed to religious beliefs and rejected them just as you certainly have been exposed to natural explanations and have rejected them.
AZAtheist -
Thank you for listening and for your comment.
As far as the age of the earth, I don’t know it and neither do you. However, please realize that a so-called Old Earth does not destroy Christianity but a so-called Young Earth does destroy atheism. This means you have no choice about what to believe on this matter, whereas I do. You may be interested to know that our 08/28/11 broadcast will be touching on this topic.
You said this in your comment: “So it should be clear that if you came on to our program you would have as much of a chance of making me believe in the Christian God as I would have making you accept the lessons of the sciences.”
Is this an invite to come on? If so, that could be interesting, yes? When you implied that you would only have a slim chance of making me “accept the lessons of the sciences” what exactly did you mean? I’m curious because I do not think an atheistic worldview can even account for the underlying assumptions behind science. Either way, I am glad you are honest about your bias - many atheists are not so upfront as you - thank you for providing clarity.
On a lighter note, I actually said that more atheists like Star TREK than Star Wars. I understand their reasons for this and I have witnessed this preference among my atheist friends. I apologize if I did not say it clearly enough in the broadcast.
On an even lighter note yet, I actually performed a Star Wars vs. Trek slam poem this year at the Phoenix Comicon … true story.
